Masked Flower and FriendThis vivid cooper red flower appears to look out of a mask. The cool, deep contrast of the blue water below provides a negative space to the features of a man with eyes, nose and a beard. A spider hides below peaking out from under a leaf and fends off unwanted pests of the Cooper-Iris.
Dancing FlowersThese two Cooper-Iris appeared to dance and leap over the wetland edge. As we waded through the swamp we found clumps of Cooper-Iris flowers growing with just a few rays of filtered light from the tree canopy above.
Arboreal SanctuaryAs we waded through the swamp filled with elegant Bald Cypress trees, the air felt rich and full of water vapor - birds sang from above and frogs greeted us nearby. The air was so humid, my camera lens began to bead up and needed constant wiping. Yet the stillness and richness of this wetland ecosystem is surreal.
BelongingAt one with its habitat. This Cooper-Iris grows happily with damp feet and with filtered light glowing from the forest canopy of Bald Cypress trees above. The rich wetlands provide an ideal habitat for symbiotic plants to grow including moss, lichen and fungi.
Snail CacoonAs we spent three hours wading and exploring the swamp - life started appearing from every angle. I observed this pretty snail, which had made a little respite inside a Cooper-Iris leaf.
Snail RadianceThis snail glows in the filtered light of the wetland. Snails are decomposers and help the ecosystem stay balanced.
Growing WildThese Cooper Iris flowers grow so tall and often start to lean over the swamp. Dynamic beauties contrast with the blue water and rich verdant water plants.
ReachingThis pair of Cooper-Irises reaches across the wetland habitat. A vibrant and saturated colored flower creates a beautiful contrast with the rugged woody background.
